The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 apply to a wide range of manual handling activities, including lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling or carrying. The load may be either inanimate – such as a box, or animate – a person or animal. More than a third of all over 3 day injuries reported to the HSE and local authorities are caused by manual handling with each injured person being off work for an average of 20 days.

The last survey in 2001/02 reported that 1.1 million people in Great Britain suffered from musculoskeletal disorders; an estimated 12.3 million days were lost from the workplace. On average each sufferer took 20 days off during that 12 month period.
